Amazon.com Announces Free Shipping with Orders over $49.00

Back in May 2002, I wrote a short article in response to a clients question about a simple exercise that businesses could use to gain more customers that are profitable. I used Amazon.com as an example, stating that they could encourage volume purchases by offering a discount. Free shipping is a great form of discount. Their campaign started in the beginning of July. /members/2002/04/index04.shtml

How Are You Treating Your Most Valuable Assets? Your People

Sharon Begley writes in the Wall Street Journal's Marketplace about Angry Engineers Blame Shortage or Low Pay, Layoffs and Age Bias (July 5, 2002) -- sharing the concerns of engineers nationwide. When things are good they are in high demand, but when things are bad they are first to go. This boom-bust mentality makes it more difficult for companies to retain (or find) good people.

Look at they way you treat your people. Watch your pay scales to pay either by skill/value or by seniority/experience but not by both. When your new people are paid as much as those who have been there for years it causes fiction between staff. One way to have better relationships with employees is consistency.

Are you interested in building better relationships with employees? Write feedback-newsletter with your specific concerns, if there is enough feedback, I will write a feature on the topic.

Have you seen a news story that I may find interesting as it pertains to strategic relations? Does your company have a story about results with strategic relations? I'd like to hear about it. Email me at feedback-newsletter

Predictions in Strategic Relations

In 3 Months, You'll Start To See The Rise Of The New Philanthropic Corporation

In the wake of the many more corporate scandals to be uncovered, many companies will start re-establishing community relations to encourage trust among a populous discouraged by past behavior. Beware of the self-righteous company. Every organized society or organization has had its share of scandal since the development of money.

Some companies will take the -- well that's not my approach -- to differentiating them from the -- big corporate greed -- a strategy not necessary or as effective as honesty. Other companies will try to make up for their misdeeds by investing in social projects and community concerns. This is great for the short term, but has it's own long term disadvantages.

Companies Will Realize The People Make The Process, Not Fancy Software

On the longer-term horizon, I see more companies' realizing the people make each process successful, not some relationship management software. If your people are not friendly to your customers, no amount of customer relationship management (CRM) software will correct it. In the same token, if your employees are not happy, expenditures in employee relationship management (ERM) or employee resource planning (ERP) will make it better. Smart companies will invest in positive people who work well with others and have quality based work traits.

If you have any questions or concerns about my prediction, maybe even your own insight, then email me at questions-newsletter – I'm always interested in hearing what you have to say.
